Love triangles, villains, corsets, pretty people, and angsty couples in the 1800s? Yes, please. The Buccaneers is about to be your new favorite guilty pleasure binge. No, not the football team. Joining the ranks of Bridgerton, Outlander, Game of Thrones, all based on epic book series, the television adaptation of Edith Wharton’s book, centered around 5 American girls who marry and dabble in English nobility, for better and for worse.
Centering around Nan St. George, and her two suitors, Guy and Theo. One’s a duke, and the other is the Duke’s best friend. Ooh, drama. Let’s just say, once the two learn of each other’s affection for the same Nan, they “duke” it out. Literally and figuratively. What’s a girl to do? “Two many Dukes, too little time,” eh, Nan? Unlike, the aforementioned books, The Buccaneers was an incomplete novel at the time of Wharton’s death, leaving us in cliffhanger purgatory. Thankfully, the show will help us through this.
We caught up with the cast of The Buccaneers when they dropped by the STYLECASTER studio to chat about the finale. We also put them to the test to see just how well they know each other. So, get ready to get to know the cast of The Buccaneers. Kristine Froseth, Guy Remmers, Matthew Broome, Alisha Boe (13 Reasons Why), Josh Dylan, Barney Fishwick, Aubri Ibrag, Josie Totah, Imogen Waterhouse, and Mia Threapleton lead this bougie bingeable goodness.
And here’s a hot take for you, The Buccaneers is just as good as Bridgerton, and might even surpass it if their first season is any indication. But it’s a baby Buccaneer with only one season so far, time will tell if it can truly go head-to-head, season-to-season with Bridgerton. But after season 1 and seeing this charismatic cast in action, a second season is a must. Mainly because the main love triangle between Nan, Guy and Theo – spoiler – of course, ends on a twist! And we need to know who Nan ends up with! Hence, we demand a second season. We can’t be left in cliffhanger purgatory like Wharton’s book. We need to see it. Sidebar: There’s a “Guy” (Matthew Broome) on the show, and the other guy’s real name is Guy. That must get confusing on set. Two Guys, A Girl & No Pizza Place.
We tested the lead triangle of Froseth, Remmers and Broome on how well they truly know each other, and this trio gave everyone a real run for their money. When asked to weigh in on what Remmers and Froseth’s favorite scene was, all three chose the exact same scene, “Stairs.” When they realized, the three screamed blowing out their mics in the process! But whatever, mic, shmic, they won the game.
The winners of the go-to-dance move goes to Boe and Dylan. They both were not shy at all about showing off their “slow hip thrust move,” and say that’s just how they greet each other on set. Well, they do play a married couple, so this bodes well for that marriage on screen?! Boe credits Dylan with teaching her something truly surprising, when revealing her favorite scene they did together. She said, “You taught me how to be a mother.” Josh Dylan, The Real Doula of The Buccaneers, watch and decide for yourself.
The darker “triangle” played by the charming Fishwick, Ibrag and Waterhouse showed they are the exact opposite of their characters IRL. The three couldn’t stop complimenting each other. Ibrag and Waterhouse both called each other beautiful, and not wanting Fishwick to be left out, they called him, “an absolute stallion.” On screen evil, off-screen adorable triangle is what they are.
Tota and Threapleton play the secret, taboo relationship between Mabel and Honoria, and Tota describes her favorite on-screen moment with Threapleton. “I sort of caressed her neck as a woman would her pet.” What? Threapleton’s reaction is quite possibly as good as the scene.
So what makes The Buccaneers stand out like Bridgerton? Not just that it includes love, corsets and horses. Bridgerton’s breakout success relied heavily on one couple, the Duke of Hastings and Daphne Bridgerton (Regé Jean-Page and Phoebe Dynevor). And when one-half of that couple decided to leave the show, it left a huge hole.
The Buccaneers offers up several strong couples and storylines, so the spine of the show doesn’t just rely on the strength of one or two people, but rather the entire ensemble. And as you’ll see from the video, the cast’s chemistry runs the gamut, from good, to evil, to romantic, to witty, to downright angsty. Watch the video and see for yourself. From favorite scenes together, to favorite dance moves, to karaoke songs, to impersonations of each other, to who wears a corset best (gentleman included), they spill all the tea. The Buccaneers is streaming now on Apple TV+.
